Women are officially buying more diamonds than men

It has long been said that diamonds are a girl's best friend, and our recent sales data insights are here to prove just that! Across the Australia, women are investing in diamond rings , engagement rings and lab-grown diamond jewellery at higher rates than ever before.

Once upon a time, a diamond ring only meant one thing: he'd proposed, you'd said yes. Now, thanks to a surge in female financial independence and the rise of lab-grown diamonds, women are no longer waiting for these to be gifted to them.

At Abelini, our data shows that female self-purchases of diamond jewellery have risen by 43 per cent year on year. Supported by research conducted by which highlighted that globally, Abelini sales associates have seen a 52 per cent jump in self-purchase orders, while non-bridal pieces, such as diamond pendants and stackable rings, have increased by 38 per cent.

Interestingly, lab-grown diamonds have surged by 67 per cent, driven mainly by women aged 25 to 40. Women are no longer waiting around to be given diamonds; they're actively choosing their own as ways to celebrate promotions, milestones, and to practice self-love.

More women than ever before have also been involved in the selection and/or design process of their engagement rings. While not the purchaser, it’s clear that women are actively involved in diamond jewellery purchases across the board.

But what exactly is driving this change?

From bonuses to break-up diamonds

Money, freedom, and a sharp eye for quality are all driving factors behind the recent spike in female diamond jewellery buyers. We're living in an age where women have more financial freedom and independence than ever before, and what better way of exercising this than stocking up on sparkles?

In fact, Mordor Intelligence’s Australia luxury goods market report states that women held almost 55 per cent of end-user share in the Australia, meaning women were responsible for more than half of Australia luxury goods purchases. This is further supported by insights from YouGov which showed that women were more likely to self-purchase luxury goods, with high-earning women more likely to spend the most.

It’s also a good time to explore ring collections. Look at styles, metals, and settings. If you like the idea of something festive, consider icy white gold, subtle sapphires, or intricate detailing that feels wintery. And if you’re the kind of person who dreams up something unique, bespoke rings are a fantastic option. You can work with a jeweller to create a piece that feels personal, maybe even inspired by something meaningful in your relationship.

For many women the act of buying themselves a diamond is both symbolic of self worth and long-term investment in a meaningful piece that holds not only its financial but emotional value. The concept of 'love' is no longer seen as something that has to be shared or waited on, but something to be practised unapologetically and independently. As the famous saying goes, "If you can't love yourself, how are you going to love anybody else?"

Many of these buyers are experiencing things in life that are much deeper than relationship statuses in today's societies, and are women who view jewellery as part of their cultural identity rather than using it as a way to signpost their relationship status. Choosing timeless pieces they can wear to meetings, school runs or dinners without feeling overdressed.

These diamonds are about introducing luxury to even practical moments, grounded in personal taste and identity rather than staunch traditions.

How diamonds are worn in 2025

Engagement Proposal

Not only have buying habits changed, but so have jewellery wardrobes, such as diamond rings and mixed-metal pieces signify some of the fastest-growing categories of 2025. Here are some top styling tips for your diamond jewellery pieces:

  • Stacked rings: The most popular trend for rings in 2025 is being spearheaded by the likes of Kate Middleton. This styling trick is best pulled off through mixing metals and creating sparkle through pairing thin diamond bands with plain gold rings.
  • Right-hand rings: Self-love is being practised by adorning the non-engagement hand with a cluster ring in celebration of promotions, birthdays, milestones or simply just because.
  • Every day diamonds: Every day should come with a bit of sparkle, which is why a delicate diamond pendant or solitaire necklace has become the accessory of choice in 2025. Combined with casual outfits like denim and a nice t-shirt, this style swap helps transition any day-to-night outfit
  • Playing with scale: Who said you need to stop at one necklace? Combining multiple chains with everyday diamonds, mixing a single statement piece with smaller and more delicate pieces for balance, is another chic but subtle trend that helps make the most of your sparkle.
  • Made for me: Our sales data also shows that bespoke jewellery has seen a significant increase over the past five years. A 2024 report by Andfacts showed that 70 per cent of Australia customers preferred personalised jewellery.

Diamonds, but more accessible

Another significant driver behind the self-purchasing revolution is undoubtedly the accessibility and quality of lab-grown diamonds. As lead purchasers continue to value sustainability and personalisation, it’s understandable why those purchasing their own diamonds would choose this route.

Not only are they able to satisfy their want for bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces, but the affordability and sustainable advantage of lab-grown diamonds mean that many women are able to choose custom settings to reflect their individuality.

Catering to the needs of successful, independent-led women is something we thrive at achieving at Abelini. As the market continues to grow, so does our offering as we predict that this is one of the groups that will continue shaping the next decade of diamond demand.
